VoxPops

Unfortunately our VoxPops video wasn't working so we got permission from our teachers and a fellow group to use their video.

Planning our filming: Weather

This week we planned to go filming on the weekend, so just to be safe we checked the weather forecast. So from the website we can see that on saturday the weather seems good enough to film. But Sunday on the other hand don't seem as good due to the chance of rain.

But also days during the week seem to also be suitable to film.

Initial Research of Artist Target Audience

The main target audience for her music would be people who are heavily interested in the Indie genre of music.

Here is a very similar artist to our chosen one but this one below is currently more successful in term of popularity with subscribers and video views on their YouTube accounts. They both have strong vocals and sing within the same genre so it would be expected that both of these artists would have the same Target audience.

What is a Digipak?

Here is an example of a six panel digipak.
A Digipak is a form of CD packaging with multiple panels which have different things which you wouldn't normally get in a ordinary cd case. these things consist of a track list, more images of artist/s, more album cover art and maybe an extra disk featuring the music videos.

Magazine Advert Analysis

This Magazine cover on the right has a rather 'Punk' like look to it, this is because of the use of cut out letters and the tartan like shirt. But the use of colours are interesting because it makes the front cover seem to stand out quite well with the use black, white and reds.

This magazine  cover uses  the same type of colour layout as the one above but  features  a black and white image instead of a colour one.  Also the  parts of the image which are coloured red such as the
NME logo and the plus sign are made really profound and make the magazine stand out. For some of the titles a serif font is used and this makes it more formal and interesting. Altogether this creates a vintage like look for the whole front cover  and i think it looks really effective in my opinion.

Proposal on how to expand\broaden audience/increase sales

One of the ways we plan to expand and broaden our music video would be to upload it to YouTube, this would then enable an extreme amount of people to view it and then pass the word on about it. Also the commenting feature enables viewers to give either positive or negative criticism about the video.
Another thing we have to consider is to keep the conventions open to enable the video to appeal to more people and social groups.

The use of posters for advertisement of the artist could be a good way to raise their profile as well as the chosen song. These the main layout of the poster can then be changed slightly to make it suitable to be put in a magazine as another form of advertisement.

Planning our filming: Locations

This posts contains images of the possible locations we plan to film in. The reason we chose this sort of location is because the genre of the song we plan to use fits with the mood of the surroundings. Below are the images:

Detailed Research into Artist

The image above is a screen grab from her website which she set up after her YouTube video's became more and more popular. This would intern raise her profile if people want to research more about her, or to inform and keep her fans unto date with her gig dates and album releases. But also it has a couple of options which offers the opportunity for people who are unaware of her music to instantly to listen to one of her songs, for example there is a direct link to one of her YouTube videos.

This here is her youtube channel which instantly give the feel of her genre of music. You can also get a rough idea of how many people follow and like her music and covers.

Here is a news article on her successfull cover of "The Power of Love" reaching the christmas number one one a well know news company "The Independent". This offers the oppotunity for a wide variety of people to discover who she is and get them interested into her music. Above is also a clip of the video.

Preliminary Exercise - What We've Learned

What we did:

  • First we found a suitable place to begin filming.
  • We then filmed both of the actors at once singing the duet.
  • Then we filmed the actors individually singing the song.
  • After attaining all of the footage we needed we began editing.
  • While editing we used the toggle clip overlay tool to arrange the clips we had in the right order.

What we have learned:

  • While being briefed on what to do we got an insight on all the things we are required to film such as, all the shots we need and how long they need to be.
  • The most important thing I have learned was how to edit the music video and make the video and song become in sync.
  • Also we took our surroundings into account, for example me made sure no one appeared in the background, checked the weather to make sure its suitable for shooting and also the lighting .
  • Another point we learned we had to consider was how serious people need to be to make the video look good.

Song Lyrics

I’m a phoenix in the water
A fish that’s learnt to fly
And i’ve always been a daughter
But feathers are meant for the sky
So I’m wishing, wishing further
For the excitement to arrive
It’s just I’d rather be causing the chaos
Than laying at the sharp end of this knife

With every small disaster
I’ll let the waters still
Take me away to some place real
'Cause they say home is where your heart is set in stone
where you go when you’re alone
Is where you go to rest your bones
It’s not just where you lay your head
It's not just where you make your bed
As long as we’re together, does it matter where we go?
Home
Home

So when I’m ready to be bolder,
And my cuts have healed with time
Comfort will rest on my shoulder
And I’ll bury my future behind
I’ll always keep you with me
You’ll be always on my mind
But there’s a shining in the shadows
I’ll never know unless I try

With every small disaster
I’ll let the waters still
Take me away to some place real
'Cause they say home is where your heart is set in stone
Is where you go when you’re alone
Is where you go to rest your bones
It’s not just where you lay your head
It's not just where you make your bed
As long as we’re together, does it matter where we go?
Home
(repeated)

'Cause they say home is where your heart is set in stone
where you go when you’re alone
Is where you go to rest your bones
It’s not just where you lay your head
It's not just where you make your bed
As long as we’re together, does it matter where we go?

Famous Album Art Analysis

Here is ACDC's Album cover for 'Highway To Hell'. I think this cover works really well and portrays and passes off their image rather well with the use of low key lighting in this image. This makes the mood of the image seem rather dark and this has a relation to the genre of music they play.
This Cover contains all the members of the band standing one in front of the other. But the lead Guitarist at the front has been edited to make him have a devil tail and horns, and creates the impression he's some sort of demon.
The Original font for the ACDC Logo has been kept the same at the top of the cover. But the Album name has been placed the bottom with a sharp looking yellow font.

This Album cover is Blur's 'Best of' album produced by Julian Opie. And with this cover he has painted the band members in his own famous style. This cartoon look as well as the use of flat colours makes the cover seem to stand out more. Also the original Blur logo has been used in the center of the cover. Overall i think the cover works really well.

Whats on a Digipak and Magazine advert?

On a Digipak you are likely to find:

  • The name of the artist/album
  • Track list
  • Barcode
  • Record company logo/images
  • Disk impression & separate disk design
  • Six panels
  • Spine - which has the name of the artist/album
  • Image of the artist
  • Quotes/reviews
What your likely to find on a magazine advert:
  • Name of artist/album
  • Also has positive reviews
  • Likely to find similar design
  • Maybe similar images on the digipak

Conventions of the Genre

Dance routines are commonly used in Hip Hop and RnB genres of music video. This can add more synchronization to the beat of the music and the visuals of the dance routine.

Costumes in a music video can be used for a couple of different things, one of these is the way you wish to portray a particular person. For example dressing an artist in a particular colour

Facial expression/language can play a really important role in a music video as it can create a very emotional atmosphere within the video. For example the Sineade O'Connor music video Nothing Compairs was a big hit primarily due to her facial expression in it.

Here is a good example of product placement within this video. In the image you can see that the headphones have been placed around the mans neck in an attempt to provide a clear view of the brand of this product. To do this the company which owns the product pays the production company of the music video to allow their product to be displayed in the video in with an aim of advertising their product.

A common shot used in more in the rock genre of music videos is of the instruments being used. This can be used to show the artists playing them and display how skilled they are and also this too  can add more synchronization between the music and video.

Emil Nava

Emil Nava first began in the media industry as a runner for film production companies, this position involves carrying out many duties ranging from office administration to cleaning up locations. This position has very long and irregular hours which overall don't pay well, but this position does offer the opportunity to get an insight in to many different parts of the media industry.

After being a runner he got promoted to Assistant director, this position enabled him to mange video shoots. He then signed to multiple companies such as Between the Eyes, Pulse and Academy which is the known for being the biggest music video production company.

He then began to make adverts which generally have a high budget but but don't have room for any artistic or creative freedom to include in the video. One of these adverts is L'Oreal's  'Dare to be Different' which has a very metallic and shiny look to the video, this may be a direct relation to the selling point of the product.

He then began to make music videos for Artists and in doing so some of these artist have now become very well known, for example after Emil Navas video for Jessie J's 'Do it Like a Dude'.
Below are some other of Emil's famous videos:

Jamie Thraves

Jamie Thraves is a British film maker/Director who has been responsible for Radiohead's 'Just' and Coldplay's famous music video  'The Scientist'.

Before all his major work he use to make short films while at university, and used one of his award winning short films as a calling card to make a step into the video production company 'Factor films'. after that he then began shooting three very low budget music videos at around the price of £5000 each.

Below are his best music videos he's known for directing.

After making music videos he then proceeded to make some some short feature length films. some of these are: The Low Down
               The Cry of an Owl
               Treacle Jr.

My 3 favourite Music Videos

In this video by Hadouken! what i really like is it features an anti social, violent character whos identity portrayed as a full sized mouse. This creates a sense of humour about the video as he performs rather mallicious acts to people in public. The use of POV shots are also interesting because it pus the viewers in the mouse position while he is being violent towards people, this kind of relates to the 'Smack My Bitch Up' video by The Prodigy.

This music video is one that i found recently but instantly found it remarcably interesting. The editing which spits the shot in two makes many oppotunities for many effects such as making his mask float and makeing two backgrounds.

This video I find very interesting because the each part that has been filmed has been sped up or majorly sped down to create a interesting effect on their movements. for example they take very small steps forwards so as the clips is sped up it looks as if they are sliding along the floor

Success Criteria

YoutubeThere are many ways now how music videos now can be judged on how successfull they are. The easiest way to compare videos would be how many views they have on youtube, for instance if we where to compare Michael Jackson's Thriller to David Bowie's Space Oddity you can see a drastic difference in views. Also another point where you can judge the videos which have been uploaded is the 'Like' and 'Dislike' buttons which can give a clear indication as to where the public find the video good or bad.

Space Oddity - 6,329,751 views currantly
Thriller - 119,405,732 view currantly

Charts are another way to judge wether or not music videos are successfull or not, these are usually measured with either views or how many albums have been brought or downloaded. these charts are normaly played on tv and all the videos are played in order.

Music award ceremonies are usualy held once a year to award artists with titles such a 'Best music video', 'Song of the year', 'Artist of the year' etc. The most well known Music award ceremony is the VMA Awards.

Top 100 greatest Music Videos Analysis

(95) The Cardigans - My Favourite Game [1998]

In this video it shows the lead singer of The Cardigans speeding dangerously in a car down a road in the middle of nowhere. this whole situation is meant to reflect a failing love affair with the car crashing cars representing it falling apart rather dramatically. In my opinion the main feature of this video which makes it successful is the use of humor when she is thrown over the front of the car and bounces of the roof of the van, the reason i feel its funny is the shear surprise from it as its not really something you would expect in a music video.

(92) Elton John - I Want Love [2001]

In this video it features Robert Downey Jr performing the Elton John's song ' I Want Love' in one continuous shot which he had to mime all the way through. The main feature of this video is the use of Robert Downey Jr himself as at the time he had been admitted to rehab for his drug abuse, and by using him it would boost his publicity in a positive way.

(85) Sid Vicious - My Way [1979]

In this video Sid Vicious is covering Frank Sinatra's 'My Way' with his punk style of singing. This comes across as being rather mocking towards Frank Sinatra as people perceive punk as not being a good genre of music and is looked down on.

( 78) Godley and Creme - Cry [1985]

This video features the used of blending and fading different clips together to mix different peoples faces together. And overall this editing creates an astounding effect which draws the viewers attention to the mixing of different peoples faces throughout the entire video.

(73) Basement Jaxx - Wheres Your Head At? [2001]

This video has an interesting build up due to the lack of unexplained narrative, and then when the main scene with the monkeys with the human faces are playing the instruments comes up its really surprising and humorous.

(66) Bob Dylan - Subterranean Homesick Blues [1965]

This video was the first one to use the iconic idea of dropping signs with lyrics on them as they are said. This video is not that well made but its very iconic and has been used in more present music videos as well as some television advertisements.

(47) Jamiroquai - Virtual Insanity [1996]

This video is well known primarily due to the effect of having the moving room with the artist inside. This caused many people to think of theories of how they made this effect happen such as a giant treadmill like machine or magnets on his feet. But the way they actually did it was by moving the room around him to give the unusual illusion. Also with this being accompanied by his well placed footwork while dancing this makes everything in the video flow more smoothly as the video plays out.

(48) Johnny Cash - Hurt [2003]

I found this video to be very effective after knowing it was his last one and how he died not long after it was made. The way the music video was shot made Johnny Cash and his surrounding s look almost like a painting with in relation the the way it was lit and the colours that were used. It video also featured clips of past  films he was casted in and music performances, so overall the music video shows a progression of his life accomplishments to where he is now.

(21) Queen - I Want to Break Free [1984]

On this videos release its revealed lead singer Freddy Mercury's true sexuality to the public and their fans. This including the drag act part at the beginning of the video caused their popularity in the United States to drop rather dramatically as this was a period when homosexuality was becoming much more accepted. other than that the video features various types of narratives from humorous to surreal/fantasy type clips.

(3) A-Ha -Take On Me [1985]

This video features really early animation to make a really creative effect which even now looks very impressive. Also the switching between animation and live camera shots makes the video less repetitive and constantly changing.

(1) Michael Jackson - Thriller [1983]

This video is known for being the number 1 music video for a number of reasons. One of the reasons is due to the built up narrative which altogether makes the whole video add up to a very short horror movie. another reason is the brilliant unchoreographed performance of Micheal Jackson in various parts of the video, also the highly iconic dance routine with the zombies.

Purpose of a music promo video

The main purpose of a music promo video is to promote the artist's and songs profile, and in turn getting more albums sold. For example the song Take on Me by A-Ha was very unpopular when it was first released, by after the music video was released the number of albums sold dramatically changed.

Other than that there are other purposes for a music video such as creating a meaning by being parallel with in the songs lyrics, an example of this would be Bronski Beat's Smalltown Boy. In this video it depicts a young gay man as he ends up in a new town where he wont be accepted by the local men.

Music videos can also be based around other elements such as an artistic statement which will either pass along a meaning or representation of a particular subject.

    Editing to the Beat

Here i have created a small segment of a music video with a song and several clips proided to us by our teachers. First I went through the clips and selected some key part which i thought looked appropriate to used and fit well with the type of song.

At first I found it rather tricky typing to keep the editing in sync with the beat, but after a while i managed to get in time with it and then add clips which make it seem the artist's body language is also in time with the song.

    Searching for music

First place we decided to look for an unsigned arstist was Unsigned.com. Here we found may artists under many various genres. On this site it really helps you to try and search specificaly find artists which meet our requirements.

We also looked for unsigned artist on Youtube, hoping to find an artist  who has made their own songs instead of covers. So therefore we wont have any legal issues with using signed artists music.
