Conventions of the Genre

Dance routines are commonly used in Hip Hop and RnB genres of music video. This can add more synchronization to the beat of the music and the visuals of the dance routine.

Costumes in a music video can be used for a couple of different things, one of these is the way you wish to portray a particular person. For example dressing an artist in a particular colour

Facial expression/language can play a really important role in a music video as it can create a very emotional atmosphere within the video. For example the Sineade O'Connor music video Nothing Compairs was a big hit primarily due to her facial expression in it.

Here is a good example of product placement within this video. In the image you can see that the headphones have been placed around the mans neck in an attempt to provide a clear view of the brand of this product. To do this the company which owns the product pays the production company of the music video to allow their product to be displayed in the video in with an aim of advertising their product.

A common shot used in more in the rock genre of music videos is of the instruments being used. This can be used to show the artists playing them and display how skilled they are and also this too  can add more synchronization between the music and video.
